mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'>South Fayette School District, with 2175 students, is a rapidly developing residential suburb located 12 miles southwest of Pittsburgh in Allegheny County, southwestern Pennsylvania. The township encompasses an area of 20.95 square miles and has a population of more than 15,000 residents. The school district is centrally located on a 160 acre tract of land. Campus facilities consist of an Elementary School (Grades K-4), Middle School (Grades 5-8), High School (Grades 9-12), Athletic Stadium/Central Administration Offices, and Bus Garage.

Faculty and Staff
Currently the staff includes more than 325 professional and support service personnel. The educational policies of the District are set by a nine member Board of School Directors who are elected to serve four year terms. The board legislates policy within the framework of the state school code and the regulation of the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Monthly committee and regular meetings are held in the High School Conference Center at 7 p.m. on the third and fourth Tuesday of each month.

Curriculum
South Fayette is a small district with a statewide reputation for excellence. A comprehensive and articulated curriculum is provided for grades K - 12 that meet the needs of all students. Graduates must complete a minimum of 26 credits throughout their high school career in the following areas: English/Language Arts, Social Studies, Science (including Biology and Chemistry), Mathematics (including Algebra II proficiency), a Foreign Language (Second Level Proficiency), Technology (Word, Access/Excel, and PowerPoint), Writing and Public Speaking, Health/Physical Education, Electives and the Senior Graduation Project. In addition, our Middle School has been identified as 2006 National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence by the United States Department of Education.

In keeping with our goal of preparing students for their future in a global society and utilizing the resources provided to the district, South Fayette was named a 2007 School of Excellence in Technology from the Pennsylvania School Boards Association. To earn this prestigious award, South Fayette had to demonstrate the use of technology to support educational programs in alignment with the District's educational goals, show evidence of improved student achievement, and prove that technology has had a positive impact on instructional practices, administrative operations, and increased parental involvement and/or community support.

Facilities: Growing to Meet Our Needs
Over the past several years, South Fayette's buildings have undergone many changes to accommodate the growing needs of our community. South Fayette High School opened in the fall of 2002 and enrollment is currently 615, nearly double the enrollment of those grades in 1990 and an 18% increase since 2002.

The Middle School was renovated in 2005 and 27 additional classrooms were added to the facility. Enrollment at the Middle School is currently 666, a nearly 20% increase in the last five years.

The Elementary School was renovated in 2006 with improvements made to the main entrance for building security. Elementary enrollment is currently 893 indicating more than a 25% increase in the last five years. Five modular classrooms are in use to handle the growing population.

The Stadium Complex was completed in 2006. The project included the artificial turf football/soccer field, the natural grass field, the softball field and concession stand, as well as the main field house that includes concession stands, locker rooms, and an upper level with press boxes, the Pride Room and the District's administration offices.

As the South Fayette Board of School Directors continues to look closely at the District's growth in student enrollment, a team from Eckles Architecture and Engineering was hired to complete a feasibility study that examined the District's educational needs and current campus space to help determine the best plan of action for the District to expand. In addition, a demographer from Carnegie Mellon University was retained to thoroughly study the population growth, new housing starts and student enrollment to provide the Board of School Directors with accurate projections for future growth.

Mission

<span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; The Olweus Bully Prevention Program is a multi-level, multi-component school-based program designed to prevent or reduce bullying in elementary, middle, and junior high schools. The program attempts to restructure the existing school environment to reduce opportunities and rewards for bullying. It works to involve all students in the preventative process, and attempts to show students that as a whole they can help to stamp out bullying in their school.

Students are exposed to many different classroom activities and discussions to inform students on how to properly and effectively eliminate and prevent instances of bullying from occurring. Open-ended conversations, videos, games stories, and journals are among the different methods utilized to express to students the importance of this topic.

The program has shown significant reductions in reports of students being bullied and bullying others, and has been awarded recognition as an Effective Substance Abuse and Mental Health Program by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Aside from reductions in bullying incidents the program has also demonstrated significant improvements in attitude towards schoolwork, classroom order and truancy.

Also, our guidance counselors at the elementary school and the middle school have conducted presentations to regular education students on Aspergers, eating disorders, etc.

Our social workers provide individual counseling to students with special needs on how to address their disability with others and how to self-advocate. They also conduct social skills groups at the elementary and middle schools.

Our FamilyLinks representative also through the PATHS program goes into special education classrooms teaching friendship skills, coping strategies, study skills, etc.

The elementary also provides a program entitled, "Rainbow Fish" Guidance Counselors provide a full range of transition support services for students. The elementary and middle school counselors provide tours and orientations twice a year-once in the beginning of the school year before school starts and once at the end of the year when students transition from the elementary school to the middle school and from the middle school to the high school. The guidance departments with the special education teachers also provide additional time for students with special needs to transition or become oriented to the changes that will occur from building to building in giving the students an opportunity to meet their teachers, paraeducators and to become familiar with their classrooms and the building. In the high school, the guidance counselors provide college and career fairs/workshops for transition into adulthood. The Team Leader for the school nurses provides a career fair every year exclusively for medical professions. The story of Rainbow Fish and his friends is centered around them playing flash tag and had excluded another fish just because the little striped fish did not have a flashy scale like the others.
